With less than a month left of 2011, some of us are feeling relieved while others may be feeling more hesitant, for some it´s been a great year and unfortunately for other not so much.

As we look back on the year, did we do as much as we could have? How was last year different to this year in terms of changing what you don´t like? Have you taken the actions you have thought about, dreamed of? If not, why? And what can you do to make it easier next time to take action?

When we fail to take action it can be for various reasons. Lets look at the main reasons we don’t take action and what we can do to change that!

 1. Waiting for the right time, the right opportunity!
The right time will never come – We have to take action and make the right things come our way! Thinking like this is like in living with the ¨ one day soon¨ outlook, where you will probably wake up one day and realize that one day never came and you have done half the things you would  have loved to in your life.

Sometimes waiting for the right time is a good thing but when it stops us from achieving our goals it isn’t. The right time is never going to come, we have to create it.

2.   Lack of priorities
When we are not clear or when we have not thought about what is important in our life, we tend not to prioritize doing the things that we know will enhance our life or make it better.

Write down your values, what is important to you. This will motivate you to have more of this in your life and take action. No matter what we do, we do what we feel is important for us, we take action with tasks that are important or we give high value to, so the tasks we keep putting off, how much of  a priority do we actually give it?

3. Fear of change and what it brings
Most of the time, it is fear that stops us from taking action. We start to think of a million lies to tell ourselves why we can do something, we justify our inaction.

We fear many things from failure to making mistakes to disappointment, and some of the times there is reason. Taking action comes with making mistakes, but the secret is that mistakes are not bad, they are good. They guide us to success, showing us what isn´t working so we can think of another way to do it. Unfortunately most people  give up just before their success break.

Balance your fears by putting them into perspective. Ask yourself what are the worst things that could happen and write down all the reasons. Then ask yourself what are the best things that could happen? Usually the best is far worth the worst.

4. Waiting for other people to make changes & then we will feel happier.
We have to be responsible for our own happiness and ourselves being happy if we ever want to live a balanced life.  If you think that you will be happier when this person changes that or he does this, you could be waiting longer than you think. People usually don´t change, it´s a sad realization most of us have to make.

You deserve to happy just like everybody else, and by you being happy, you are making those around you happier too!

5. Not wanting to do something out of habit
Most of us have a habit of taking the easier option, doing something that doesn’t push us out of our comfort zone. The moment we feel that something might, we start to make excuses about why we can´t do it or why we don’t feel like doing it.

We may enjoy doing the task and even want to do it, but we might still at times just not feel like doing it. If you feel that you are not taking action because you are set in your habits, these habits might not be serving you. The good news to change any habit takes around one month. It takes a lot of effort and you will need to reaffirm your commitment often and always take action, even when we don’t feel like it.

6. Procrastination
This is the biggest culprit for us not taking action, but you will have to read my  e-book for a more detailed explanation, below are 5 main reasons.

1.  Positive emotional impact – what is the positive emotional impact that the negative behavior has on you?
2. Being told what to do – we might put off, delay and procrastinate doing exactly that which we’ve been told to do.
3. Self – sabotage – you might be self sabotaging your success if you don’t feel ready
4. Fear of failure – maybe there is a task that you don´t feel confident in your ability to do it, or you are afraid of something
5. I don’t feel like doing it – lack of motivation

Its always easier to talk about change than to do it, but if you keep doing what
you doing, nothing will change! You only have one life, why not create it to be
one that you love! If you can see it, you can believe it. If you can believe it,
you can achieve it. The first step is taking action!

“A man is the sum of his actions, of what he has done, of what he can do, Nothing else.” Mahatma Gandhi
