Effective time management starts with a deeper understanding of what really isn’t working and what is contributing to these results.  We all want more time for ourselves, who doesn’t? Even just one or two hours extra a day would make the world of a difference for many I’m sure! The ironic part however, is that if you manage your time more effectively, you can save up to hours a week.

So where does everyone go wrong then? Why do so many people still struggle to manage their time and increase productivity? From my experience, there are three main reasons.

1) Time management isn’t only a surface level problem. We tend to think of time management as something external, unrelated to anything that might be going on inside us. We focus on implementing new time management techniques and tips and if this doesn’t work, we give up. The root of the problem is still there and we become disillusioned at ever mastering time. 2) Time management techniques and tips are not like cookie cutters! You cannot try to apply a certain system as is, without adjusting it to suit you. There is a wealth of information on how to manage your time more effectively, but you need to tailor this information according to your needs and personal situation. If you read for example, that you need to arrange your time in a certain way and do certain things, but it doesn’t resonate or it won’t work for you, you are left in the same position as before.

If you feel that you are not able to apply the time management techniques and tips that you read, you most likely need to personalize them for your situation. Getting professional guidance is the best step if you find yourself in this situation.

3) It is not only about time management skills, it starts with your mindset. A proper time management mindset is key to success.
