Using Set Shifting to increase your productivity is one of the best ways to get more done and stay focused.  Set shifting is a cognitive skill that refers to the ability to switch between tasks or mental sets flexibly. It is an important skill for productivity and focus, as it allows individuals to shift their attention and adapt to new situations or tasks quickly.

Set shifting  and multitasking are both cognitive abilities that involve switching between tasks, but they are different in nature. We all know that multi-tasking hinders productivity.

Set Shifting vs Multitasking

Multitasking refers to the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, or to switch rapidly between different tasks. Examples of multitasking include talking on the phone while driving, or checking email while attending a meeting. Unlike set shifting, which involves the inhibition of previous tasks, multitasking requires the ability to maintain attention on multiple tasks and switch quickly between them. The truth is that only 5% of humans can multi-task efficiently.

Multitasking can decrease your productivity because the human brain is not designed to handle multiple complex tasks at the same time. When you try to do multiple things simultaneously, your brain has to rapidly switch back and forth between tasks, which can lead to a decrease in concentration and a reduction in the quality of your work.

Additionally, when you multitask, you may feel like you are getting more done, but in reality, you are simply dividing your attention and working on each task less efficiently than you would if you focused on one task at a time. This can result in errors, missed details, and a longer overall time to complete each task.

Multitasking can increase stress levels, as it can be mentally and emotionally taxing to constantly switch between tasks. It can also negatively impact your ability to learn and retain information, as your brain may struggle to properly process and store the various pieces of information you are trying to absorb.

Remember that set shifting and multitasking are both cognitive abilities that involve task switching, but set shifting involves the ability to shift attention and cognitive resources from one task to another.  This also helps your energy levels and focus as you are control where it goes.

Here are some tips on how to use set shifting to increase productivity and focus:

1. Prioritize tasks: Identify the most important tasks and prioritize them based on their level of importance and urgency. This will help you to focus on the tasks that require your immediate attention and avoid getting bogged down by less critical tasks.

2. Break tasks into smaller chunks: Divide larger tasks into smaller, more manageable pieces. This will help you to focus on one aspect of the task at a time and make progress towards completing the overall goal.

3. Take breaks: Regular breaks can help you to reset your mental focus and recharge your energy levels. Use these breaks to shift your attention away from work-related tasks and engage in relaxing activities such as meditation or exercise.

4. Switch between tasks: When you find yourself getting stuck on a task, try switching to another task for a few minutes. This will allow your brain to shift gears and refocus on a new task. Just be sure to avoid switching too often, as this can lead to decreased productivity.

5. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing or meditation can help you to stay focused and improve your ability to shift your attention when needed. By practicing mindfulness regularly, you can improve your overall productivity and reduce stress levels.

6. Use technology to your advantage: There are many productivity tools available that can help you to stay organized and focused. For example, project management software can help you to track your progress on tasks, while apps such as Focus@Will can provide music that helps you to stay focused.

Incorporating these strategies into your daily routine can help you to develop your set shifting skills and increase productivity and focus in all areas of your life.
