Suffering from `poor time management skills´ in one way or another is something most people experience. Most of us know what it feels like to feel stressed, overwhelmed, disorganized and `all over the place`. If you feel like this on a continuous basis, you really want to do something about it. There are those who decide that they really can´t go on feeling this way and sign up for some time management course or training for example. Rightly so, if you are not managing your time, you need to learn key skills to improve your productivity.
However, for some, you might have mental barriers to break through first. If you invest in improving your skills but you don´t really believe that you will master them or you don´t really value your time, you are going to be disappointed with the results. You need to start by valuing your time and changing your mindset; this is the first key to altering your time.
Time is the one resource that we cannot buy or make more of. One the main reasons so many people struggle with time management is because they don´t have the right mindset to support them. What are your beliefs regarding time? Many believe that they are born with some type of deficiency when it comes to organization. This cannot be further from the truth, no one is born organized or disorganized.
The way you currently behave and manage your time, is the effect of what you have learnt as you grew up, not something you were born with. Your parents, all the other individuals that influenced you in your life, you picked up on their behaviors, developed habits, and the results you have in your life now is because of that. If you have bad time management habits, you can change them, just as you learnt them, you can unlearn them. You cannot use excuses like ¨I was born this way¨ or ¨I´ve always been disorganized, it is just the way I am¨. This is simply not true. The sooner you take responsibility for your bad habits, the sooner you can correct them.
To change limiting habits is not easy, but definitely possible, you can successfully develop new habits and skills with repetition and discipline. Einstein once said that insanity is doing the same thing over and expecting a different result. If you want different results, make the changes you need to and believe that you have control to take back control.
It is important to take note that the way in which you think about your time is directly reflected by your actions. If your actions are not bringing you the results you want, you need to look at the beliefs and thoughts behind the actions you take, you may need to develop beliefs that support you. Remember that you can change your time, you are not born with bad time management skills or a certain gene that makes you untidy, for example. All of these crazy thoughts need to be adjusted for you to really alter the way you use your time.
What about valuing your time? Every minute that passes, is a choice of how you want to spend your time. How are you choosing to spend your time, do you value the time that you have? If you truly value your time, you won´t waste it on menial activities, activities that bring you no value or results, only false feelings of ¨being busy¨.
When you begin to really respect and make thought out decisions about what you want to do with your time, you will transform your results. You don´t throw money away so why do so many people throw time away? You only have one ´today´, one now and one life. You don`t get a second chance to come back and do it all over again. Value your time and change your limiting beliefs and you will change your life.
